Ahead of the Virginia General Assembly nominations, the generic ballot test over at Real Clear Politics shows somevolatility with Politico/Morning Consult polling going +9, +3, and +11 in three consecutive weeks of weekend polling.
While the average is +9 (where the Democrats were in 2017 on Election Day when they swept statewide offices and picked up 15 House of Delegates seats) it is important to factor in that the polling universe is Registered Voters over weekends that also preceded and succeeded the release of the long awaited Mueller Report.
Interesting to also note in the Georgetown University Civility Poll, that the vast majority of voters want compromise and civility in our politics; however, voters also want their side to fight for their values at the same time.
“The poll also revealed contradictions within the electorate. Eighty-five percent (85%) of voters polled believe “compromise and common ground should be the goal for political leaders” (including 80% of Republicans, 87% of Independents, and 90% of Democrats). And yet seventy-nine percent (79%) of voters say they are tired of leaders compromising their values, and want them to stand up to the other side (including 85% of Republicans, 69% of Independents and 78% of Democrats).
On Virginia FREE Radio (Mondays 10am to 1pm) we have recently interviewed several candidates seeking their party’s nomination. Among them were Senator Emmett Hanger and his second segment Part 2 along with his Challenger Tina Freitas .
Senator Dick Saslaw joined us saying that governing ultimately happens in the center and that we need to constantly keep growing our economy so we can invest in our core services.
Delegate Chris Peace who has a convention nomination battle scheduled for May 4th. We rate his election a TOSS UP.

Salena Zito who wrote a book on the Trump voters in 2016 had a recent column that concluded with:
The fusion of conservatives and populists who make up the Trump coalition that placed Trump in the White House will continue long after whatever date the president leaves office. And despite the efforts of the press, and despite Trump’s own actions, those in the Trump coalition are unlikely to change their mind, because the only alternative is an elite who paints them as a villainous segment of our society.
Calling to mind memories from the summer of 2008 – rising gas prices and consumer debt delinquencies are these two stories:
WSJ – Oil Soars to Highest Level Since October
• West Texas Intermediate, the U.S. crude benchmark, added 1.1% to $66.30 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Prices are at their highest level since late October and are up about 46% for the year but still 13% below their multiyear highs hit last fall.
Car Payment Delinquencies hit 7 million – Business InsiderPeople often prioritize car loans because many need to drive to get to work and earn a paycheck, The Washington Post’s Heather Long reported. The fact that a record number of Americans aren’t making those payments is “usually a sign of significant duress among low-income and working-class Americans,” Long wrote.
There has been and will continue to be a dialogue about the nature of our regulated free market capitalist economy and socialism. Here are some interesting articles and links that can inform that dialogue.
No, All Democrats are not Socialists – Jordan Peterson and Gregg Hurwitz
By no means does “moderate” mean “without passion.” Steel is tempered so that it can bend without breaking. At a moment when it seems America’s national identity is at risk of being fractured, we should admire the fiery Senate-floor retort of Sen. Michael Bennet, who decried the broken legislative system. What this moment requires is neither radical virtue-signaling nor stay-the-course complacency, but passion wedded to achievable purpose. Voters would do well to tune out the latest Twitter notification and pay attention to how the Democrats actually vote.
